Nutrient pumping/advection by propagating Rossby Waves in the Kuroshio Extension

چکیده
Ten years (1998–2007) of sea-level anomalies (SLA) frommultiple satellite altimeters and chlorophyll-a concentration from the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) were used to detect eddy pumping/advection of nutrients by the action of propagating Rossby waves in the Kuroshio Extension (KE) region near 35N after the seasonal SeaWiFS chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentrations cycles and annual changes of altimeter SLA were eliminated. Spatial structure of Chl-a anomalies to the seasonal cycle is examined in relation to altimeter eddy structure. Eddy propagation speeds and scales by the Rossby waves are also identified. Chl-a structure is evident during the spring bloom period with a scale around 460 km. Cold-core (cyclonic) rings correspond to areas of high Chl-a concentrations. Warm-core (anticyclonic) rings relate to areas of low Chl-a concentration. Chl-a anomalies and SLA have an overall modest negative correlation coefficient of r1⁄4 0.45, which may imply the co-existence of both eddy pumping and eddy advection mechanisms in the KE region. Swirl currents between eddies redistribute surface chlorophyll concentrations and can spatially bias maximum and minimum concentration levels off eddy center. The correlation coefficient has seasonal fluctuations. In the western KE region, it varies from high negative correlation (r1⁄4 0.70) in April and September (eddy pumping dominant) to low negative correlation (r1⁄4 0.33) in February and March (eddy advection dominant). In the eastern KE region, it varies from high negative correlation (r1⁄4 0.67) in February to low negative correlation (r1⁄4 0.42) in December. It is noted that the characteristic wavelengths of the SLA and Chl-a features, and the seasonality of the correlation between these two variables have not been previously documented. The Forcing of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation*
The Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO), defined as the leading empirical orthogonal function of North Pacific sea surface temperature anomalies, is a widely used index for decadal variability. It is shown that the PDO can be recovered from a reconstruction of North Pacific sea surface temperature anomalies based on a first-order autoregressive model and forcing by variability of the Aleutian low...
متن کاملWind-Driven Thermocline Variability in the Pacific: A Model–Data Comparison
The spatial and temporal patterns of interannual temperature variability within the main thermocline (200– 400-m depth) of the Pacific (308S–608N) during 1968–97 are documented in two observational datasets and an ocean general circulation model forced with observed winds and air temperatures. Analysis of the processes responsible for the subsurface temperature variance is used to verify the pe...
متن کاملComment on "Oceanic Rossby waves acting as a 'hay rake' for ecosystem floating by-products".
Waves Acting As a ‘Hay Rake’ for Ecosystem Floating By-Products” Remote sensing of the sea surface has shown that Rossby waves (RWs), or planetary waves, are ubiquitous in the world ocean (1, 2), although the precise mechanisms for their formation and propagation are still under debate (3–5). Recently, similar propagating signals have been observed in ocean color (6, 7). Here, too, the mechanis...
متن کاملOn long baroclinic Rossby waves in the tropical North Atlantic observed from profiling floats
[1] Argo float data (subsurface tracks and temperature profiles collected from March 2004 through May 2005) are used to detect signatures of long Rossby waves in the velocity of the currents at 1000-m depth and temperature, between the ocean surface and 950 m, in the zonal band of 4 N–24 N in the tropical North Atlantic. Different types of long Rossby waves (with the characteristic scales betwe...
متن کاملTime-Dependent Ventilated Thermocline
In this thesis, I study the time-varying behavior of a ventilated thermocline with basin scales at annual and decadal time scales. The variability is forced by three external forcings: the wind stress (chapter 3), the surface heat flux (chapter 4) and the upwelling along the eastern boundary (chapter 5). It is found that the thermocline variability is forced mainly by wind in a shadow zone whil...
